Frequently Asked Questions

Having a basic understanding on what is expected and knowledge of keywords that will be used during a new roof installation is essential for the customer and our company to have transparency. At Rhino Home Care we appreciate customers who educate themselves and take the initiative to learn about the key vocabulary and have an understanding of what each person will be doing during the process of obtaining a new roof.

An adjuster is an insurance claims specialist who interprets the homeowner's policy, assesses the damage and how much it will cost to repair or replace your roof and negotiates with the roofing company of your choice on behalf of the homeowner until the claim is settled. Adjusters are professionals who act solely on behalf of the policyholder and help ensure homeowners get the money they are entitled to under their policy. They differ from your insurance agents as they help clients choose the plans that fit your needs.
Laminated shingles are one of the most popular and effective choices of shingling for a roof. These shingles are made out of several layers of fiberglass that are dipped in asphalt and are then coated with fire-resistant granules. They are also known as dimensional and architectural shingles to differentiate them from traditional 3-tile shingles.
Roof vents are made from reliable galvanized steel. The large base offers added weatherproofing protection and ease of installation. This vent features an internal aluminum screen to prevent intrusion by birds or large insects. An attic ventilator is essentially a port where air can escape to the outdoors (it allows hot air to escape in the summer).
A ridge vent is an air exhaust vent installed on the peak of a roof. When installing this vent, an air slot is first cut in the roof deck at the roof's peak. This air slot is then covered by the ridge vent itself. They help to provide continuous, uniform exhaust ventilation at the highest portion of the attic and are designed to help resist wind-driven rain and snow, as well as insect and debris infiltration.
Synthetic roof underlayment is extremely durable. It typically doesn’t tear and is suitable for extended UV and moisture exposure. Roofing underlayment is what lies between the shingles and the roof sheathing, or roof deck, which is typically either plywood or OSB. It’s installed directly on the roof deck and provides a secondary layer of protection from the elements, including rain, snow, and wind.
A roof valley is located where two sloped roofs meet, it’s designed to guide rainwater down the roof where it then typically discharges into the guttering. Usually, a “V” or “W” shaped metal piece is placed in the valley to channel water off your roof. Roof valleys are very important for a "roofing system" to work correctly and must be done right and taken care of to keep them in good condition. Roof valleys are subjected to more rainwater than any other part of the roof.
A drip edge is a non-staining and non-corroding material applied on a roof’s edge to give water the ability to filter out of the roof system. In other words, it is the metal flashing located at the edge of a roof. Drip edge is a metal flashing that is installed at the edges of the roof to help control the flow of water away from the fascia and to protect the underlying roofing components. Drip edge overhangs the sides of the roof and has a small metal flange that is bent away from the fascia.
