Every sloping yard poses a unique challenge for fence installation, but a double gate is often the trickiest element of all.
Our client had an existing double gate designed to open outward. The fundamental problem was that the grade of the yard sloped upwards from that point.
Because of this terrain, a significant, unsightly, 3-inch gap had to be left at the bottom of the fence when closed. If the gap was closed, the gates would bottom out and drag, preventing them from opening more than a few feet. It was a classic case of trying to fight the natural topography of the land.
To fix this properly, we didn't just tweak the gate; we completely re-engineered the solution.
Changing the Direction (The Game-Changer): The single biggest improvement was our decision to reverse the swing. Instead of trying to force the gate uphill, we made the doors swing inward, following the natural downhill grade of the slope. This allowed us to build the gate tight to the ground for security and aesthetics while still allowing full functionality.
Structural Overhaul: We upgraded the entire infrastructure of this section. We removed the old supports and set heavy-duty metal posts in deep concrete footings. Metal posts are critical for wide double gates as they prevent the hinges from sagging over time.
Material Upgrade: We replaced the old infrastructure with all-new cedar rails and pickets and applied a beautiful, weather-resistant stain. This provides a striking, high-end look that complements the customer’s stone exterior much better than the weathered lumber it replaced.
